Welcome To Our Den

We have officially become people of the woods. If I had the money and the means, I would build us a home there, slap bang in the middle of the ferns and the conifers. A little hideaway, safe from the burning world.
As it is, we have to settle for spending as much time as possible out in nature.

Exploring, resting, relaxing, recharging and adventure seeking is our jam.

This week, we took (yet another) trip to Worsley Woods – if you’re local and haven’t been, what are you doing with your life? We had a lovely long ramble around the woods before finding a quiet and secluded spot to have a quick picnic. We were the only people there and it was bliss. The kids could run around to their hearts content without having to worry about stranger danger (yes, I’m that paranoid Mum) or social distancing. They loved being able to really roam free, further from us than usual, without being restricted.

While we were sat there we saw a little den and got the idea to build one ourself. I’ve always wanted to have a go. It was so easy and so much fun. The kids spent at least an hour gathering and carefully placing their sticks and leaves. It was so lovely to watch them really getting involved with a project. Teddy even built a little path and a road to the den so that other people could find it.

The icing on the cake was writing their names and the date on a random plank of wood we found, which we used as a ‘welcome’ sign.

I have to be honest, I was really chuffed and a little bit smug about what we achieved together and love the idea that other people will get to enjoy it too.

I promised the kids we would return regularly to check on it, although I’m dreading going back only to find it’s been destroyed by someone. The kids would be absolutely crushed and to be fair, so would I.

Getting outdoors really has been our saving grace during lockdown as we are still sheltering fairly strictly. We see very few people, to keep our bubble small, while also avoiding shops and other people’s houses. So being able to have these little adventures has kept us all level and calm and I hope it has helped the kids feel like they haven’t spent the last four months missing out on life.
